Abstract

Bacterial indicators of water pollution, for example total and fecal coliforms, fecal streptococci, etc, may become stressed or injured in unfavourable environmental conditions. Stressed microorganisms need short periods for their revivification on non-selective media. Injured microorganisms, on the contrary, require longer periods for their recovery, sometimes more than 72 hours. Therefore, these bacterial strains cannot be detected through official methods of analysis or they may be underestimated. For this reason, an analytical procedure is being improved to detect stressed and injured germs; this paper compares the results obtained using the above methods.
