Abstract

The European Union collaborates with 10 countries of Central Europe (CCE) including the Baltic States in order to allow their accession to the Union. The European Union also wishes to encourage links with the new independent States of the former Soviet Union (NIS), and the CCE so as to reinforce the innovation potential throughout the continent. In this context, a specific action was launched, under the name of Copernicus. This action enables the financing of joint research projects and cooperation networks associating laboratories and organizations from Eastern and Western Europe.

This publication gives a summary of the Copernicus projects selected and financed in 1996. Following a call for proposals with deadline 29 February 1996, there were 261 projects selected, for which ECU 68 million was allocated. This catalogue will be followed by a second volume containing the projects to be financed in 1997.

Among fields of mutual interest are: environment and health; information and communication technologies; materials and production technologies; biotechnology; transport; agro-food; energy technologies; and measurement and testing. ng.
