The powdery residues of coal washing (schlamms) are rejected in tips and occupy very large spaces. Technical-economical and environmental factors support the need to know these stocks with precision. In order to develop and to validate a quantitative evaluation methodology, various questions concerning the sampling, the analysis of the interesting physical-chemical parameters, the reserve estimation and the study of spatial variability must be answered.

Data are collected on a test site (Zolder, Belgium): systematic deterministic sampling of 295 non reworked metric samples; physical-chemical analysis of the granulometry of the fines, ash content, sulfur content and of the calorific power value; aerial photogrammetric survey of the site; creation of a georeferenced database linked to a geographic information system.

The results can be translated into methodological recommendations: define precisely what the data will be used for; consider the simplifications with the utmost prudence; select the interpretation procedures according to the expected accuracy and precision; consent compromises with the technical exploitation and valorization conditions; maintain a dialogue and collaborate with the experts of the various disciplines which are called upon. on.
