Abstract

Risk assessment is one of the main elements of national and international policy on substances. When pursuing a policy aimed at protecting man and the environment against dangerous substances it is important to know the risks such substances pose. Government authorities, research institutes and industry are frequently involved in risk assessment. For them, the Uniform System for the Evaluation of Substances (USES 1.0) became available in 1994. On the basis of the European Union (EU) technical guidance documents for new and existing substances a successor has now been developed: the EU System for the Evaluation of Substances (EUSES). This system enables users to assess risks rapidly and efficiently.
