Abstract

A passive sampling monitoring campaign was carried out in the city of Catania, to assess the impact of traffic emissions and to determine risk areas exposed to aromatic hydrocarbons (BTX). Forty four passive samplers were used to study an area of 6.5 km{2}. The sampling was divided in two periods of one month duration in winter and summer. Benzene concentration higher than 15 µgm{-3} were detected, only during the winter period. Nevertheless, benzene concentrations higher than 10 µgm{-3} were consistently exceeded in numerous areas, all of them characterized by high automotive traffic.
