The mechanical properties of high purity chromium (99.7% Ducropur) were investigated by means of tensile and microhardness tests, optical and scanning electron microscopy with x-ray analysis. The manufactures data for yield strength, tensile strength, hardness and Young's modulus were verified for small specimens suitable for irradiation experiments. However, inclusions with considerable deviations from the mean chemical composition were detected. These impurities (Al, Si, K, Ca, W) are probably responsible for the degradation of mechanical properties. The ductile brittle transition temperature (DBTT) was found to be 80 C ± 20 C.
