Abstract

During 1995, a survey of the top 500 European industrial companies, top 25 banks and insurance companies and top 25 services companies was carried out. Its main objective were to:
describe the research and technological development (RTD) strategy process in the top 500 companies;
understand why and how the top 500 companies participate in the Framework Programme and EUREKA.

This report was based on interviews of a sample of 125 of these companies, 12 case studies and a documentation analysis. Comments and guidance were also received from the industrial research and development advisory committee of the European Commission (IRDAC). In addition to a description and main findings, this report includes an annex covering the methodology and history of the 500 companies and a second annex providing a structured analysis of industrial segmentation (covering issues such as globalization; market concentration; research and development expenditure and activities; market opportunities; patent analysis; RTD strategy, organization, projects partnering strategy, networks and alliances; and, interfaces between the Framework Programme and EUREKA) and case study notes. es.
