Interstitial positions of tin ions in alpha-Fe(2)O(3)-SnO(2) solid solutions prepared by mechanical alloying
The microstructures of 94, 85, and 71 mol% alpha-Fe(2)O(3)-SnO(2) samples prepared by mechanical alloying have been studied by X-ray diffraction (XRD) with Rietveld structure refinements. The alpha-Fe(2)O(3)-SnO(2) solid solutions with higher SnO(2) contents in the immiscible ceramic system have been synthesized by mechanical alloying. On the basis of the structure refinements to the whole X-ray diffraction patterns for the as-milled samples, it is found that tin ions do not substitute iron ions in the solid solutions, although this model is generally assumed in literature. They do occupy the empty octahedral holes in the lattice when they diffuse into alpha-Fe(2)O(3) phase.
