Abstract

Pinonaldehyde (4-acetyl-2,2-dimethyl-cyclobutyl-ethanal) has been found as one of the major products from the tropospheric oxidation of alpha-pinene. The fate of pinonaldehyde in the troposphere is unknown, but when taking its structure into account, only H-abstraction should be important. The rate constants for the reactions of OH, NO(3) and O(3) with pinonaldehyde and several structurally related compounds have been measured in order to estimate their lifetimes. Preliminary results indicate surprisingly fast reactions of pinonaldehyde with OH and ozone. The findings are discussed in relation to structurally similar compounds.
