Mechanistic study of the atmospheric degradation of isoprene and MBO
In this study we investigated the products from the OH radical initiated photo-oxidation of isoprene and 2-methyl-3-buten-2-ol (MBO) as well as the oxidation products from their reaction with ozone (O(3)). With isoprene, the main products were found to be methacrolein, methyl vinyl ketone, formaldehyde, formic acid, CO and CO(2). With MBO, the main products were found to be acetone, 2-methyl-2-hydroxy-propanal, glycolaldehyde, formaldehyde, CO and CO(2). The detailed mechanism of the degradation of isoprene and MBO leading to the end products are discussed.
