Abstract

A thermodynamic study was performed on the systems Am-O, AmO(x)-MgO and AmO(x)-MgAl(2)O(4). Both experimental work (X-ray analyses, oxygen potential measurements, etc) and calculations on the phase diagrams involved were made. Such data are important for transmutation of americium in inert matrices. The implications of the results to the technological application are discussed, with emphasis on the effects on the high oxygen potential of AmO(2) as compared to the convential fuel UO(2).
