Thermal fatigue in ceramic plating on cutting tools by acoustic emission
In this paper, we propose a method for quality evaluation through acoustic emission for WC-Co cutting tips covered with an 8 µm layer of titanium nitride and carbon nitride applied by PVD technique. Tips with and without defects underwent thermal shocks and their dynamic response was studied. The differences in acoustical behaviour can be used for a semi-quantitative discrimination of different levels of imperfection. Results obtained were confirmed through scanning electron microscopy (SEM) observations.
