Abstract

Since the beginning of the 1930s, it has been known that electronic surface conditions exist. Whilst, already in the exploratory work, the relevance of electronic surface conditions on insulators was contemplated, and its relevance for semiconductors was also recognised early, the surface conditions of metals were only considered of little importance until just recently. The article attempts to clarify the influence of electronic surface conditions on various processes and phenomena on metal surfaces.
