The aim of the work was to speed up drilling and blasting, even under difficult drilling conditions, as well as an improvement on the technique of anchoring on narrow pit areas.

Earlier investigations have shown that considerable performance reserves are to be found in the drill head design. Pneumatic and hydraulic drill hammer and rotating drill machines on the other hand have these days reached a high performance standard. It is possible, when using several hydraulic drill hammers, to adjust the number of hits and the individual force of each hit to the relevant stone conditions. In the case of finely layered and very rugged rock, drilling with minimal single hit energies is required. Drill heads with a parabolic shape of a hard metal point are well suited, in a large number of cases, in existing German coal mining conditions. .
