In front of the background of extremely high air conditioning costs and the increasingly closer approach to the technical limits for increasing refrigeration capacity on the collieries, the superordinate aim of the research project was to assure sufficient air conditioning of the individual operations sites, if possible without boosting refrigeration capacity. That work can be subdivided essentially into three fields of main effort: possibilities of adjustment and control of the cooling equipment; development work on hydraulic drive for fans of air coolers; Investigations on components of ventilation air cooling systems for identifying possibilities of technical improvement.

The investigations and tests carried out within the framework of the research project yielded fundamental information on savings potentials and on feasibility of adjustment and control interventions. Comprehensive investigations/tests were carried out on measuring equipment and control valves as possible components of control circuits. Investigations/tests on hydrodrives for fans, on isolating tubes, recoolers, face coolers, and roadway air coolers have shown that, even with operationally reliable components of a ventilation air cooling system, further optimization is required. .
