The aim of this project was to develop and exploit control monitoring systems to promote more effective automation and greater integration of coalface operations. To support this development a range of personal computer based simulators was developed. An automatic frequency control (AFC) load control algorithm was developed as a face control centre application. Development of the simulators - chock system, shearer, AFC and general purpose monitoring (GPMO) - had reached an advanced stage, and the AFC load control algorithm was under test when the project was terminated. The project demonstrated that it is possible to produce highly accurate simulators of typical underground plans using modern PC technology. Further development would have allowed the full mining cycle to be simulated with sufficient accuracy and flexibility to eliminate most requirements for testing with real hardware.
