It was the aim of this research to examine the suitability of the method of catalytic combustion to oxidise methane in the used air in pits under realistic conditions, and to clarify the possibilities of using the resulting energy.

Programme of work:

- Establishing of suitable catalysts and their operating conditions as well as estimating their catalytic activity (turnover/temperature dependency) from the maker's instructions;
- Development of possible method configurations with heat assessments and searching for further possibilities for using heat;
- Laboratory tests of suitable catalysts under close-to-real conditions to gain the interpretation data and to therewith revalue the concept (kinetic data for various catalysts as well as heat assessments have shown that there exists no economic possibility for methane oxidation for used air in pits, therefore it was decided to do without the execution of the laboratory tests);
- Demonstrate possible alternative methods for the catalytical oxidation of methane in used air in pits.
