This report presents the results of a study commissioned by the Institute for Prospective Technological Studies (IPTS) in the field of nanotechnology. This subject is part of a broad area of interest for IPTS, which aims to analyse the implications of advanced technologies. Nanotechnology is a promising emerging field where recent progress of relevant disciplines such as physics, biology, chemistry, materials and computer science converges. It aims at a very broad range of applications, from biomedical and information technologies to environment and production technologies. This work represents the first step of IPTS in this subject. The report presents an overview of nanotechnology and related activities, with special emphasis on promising interdisciplinary aspects. It provides the current state of nanotechnology in the main EU countries, the US and Japan, and draw conclusions and recommendations for action at European level.
