Seasonal variability of coastal upwelling of Northwest Africa and Portugal 1981 to 1991
Seasonal variability of coastal upwelling in the Northwest African and Portuguese upwelling areas has been examined for the period from 1981 to 1991 using satellite derived sea surface temperature (SST) and wind data. From the data sets 2 independent upwelling indices have been extracted and are compared with previously published data of seasonal variability. In the Moroccan part of the Northwest African upwelling area, special attention is given to the Cape Ghir region, where upwelling is locally intensified and apparently not determined by the winds only. Plans for future activities using SST data to study continental scale phenomena are briefly outlined.
