Thermographic monitoring in fatigue testing of carbon composites
This work is centred on infrared thermography monitoring of mechanical behaviour during fatigue testing of quasi-isotropic carbon/epoxy specimens. Fatigue testing with 2 values of loading ratio (R=0.1 and R=-1) have been carried out and in some coupons a half-width diameter hole was made in order to create a stress local concentration. Maximum load was about 60% of ultimate tensile stress and frequencies employed were 10 and 20 Hz. Some results were obtained on the presence and initiation of delamination phenomena. Despite the preliminary nature of this work, some possibility of comparison can be envisaged with other real-time results, coming, for example, from acoustic emission.
