This report presents the results of a project set up to investigate the applications for, and improvements to, the range of on-line coal quality monitors (CQMs) currently used in the coal industry. The objective was to increase the already significant benefits obtained from using coal quality monitors, to improve product quality and productive output. The work involving the Natural Gamma (NGCQM) and Ram Feed (RFCQM) has resulted in improvements to existing instruments which will be of benefit to the coal industry and may give a greater market penetration in other areas. A new large symmetry version of the NGCQM has been designed which should overcome problems of accuracy limitations due to load geometry dependency. The RFQM has been developed further and now offers a more robust and informative monitoring system similar to that used in the NGCQM.
