Within the British mining industry two different approaches to maintenance/repair have been researched and subsequently developed into practical and usable systems. These are a maintenance philosophy based on machine element condition parameters and an expert system methodology applied to the diagnosis of faults in the event of a machine breakdown. This report describes the progress towards the integration of these two concepts into an on-line, surface-based system, before the premature termination of the project.
