Remote sensing of ocean colour; past and future applications in European waters
The scope of the Marine Environment Unit of the Space Applications Institute (SAI-ME) is to develop, promote and validate methodologies for the use of satellite observations in both scientific investigations and operational applications related to the marine system. The presented work is an attempt to summarize the experience gained in marine studies by the launch of the Coastal Zone Colour Scanner (CZCS) which collected ocean colour data from 1978 to 1986 on board the Nimbus-7 satellite. Substantial contributions to this experiment by SAI-ME continued through-out the last decade to provide a better understanding of the ocean circulation and the biogeochemical processes in Europe.
