Stable isotope amount ratio measurements of noble gases, a potential method to detect reprocessing activities
New approaches need to be developed and implemented, aiming to strengthen the safeguards system. One particularly interesting area is the application of environmental sampling for safeguards purposes. Chemical and isotopic analysis of samples collected within or away from declared nuclear facilities allow characteristic signatures to be read. One aspect covers the measurement of the isotopic composition of the noble gases krypton and xenon. Indications on reprocessing activities might be obtained from such measurements.
