Abstract

Since there is no common policy for forestry in Europe, forestry activities are dealt with in a rather disparate manner within the Commission. In 1989 a European Forestry Information and Communication System (EFICS) was set up (DGVI). In 1992, the PHARE-MERA (MARS and Environmental Related Activities) Project (DGI) was launched with the aim of extending the Space Applications Institute's (SAI) activities in Europe outside of the EU. Following this, the EMAP Unit of the SAI, launched the FIRS (Forest Information from Remote Sensing) Project. This paper briefly describes the work which has been completed and the future prospectives of these activities in forestry and remote sensing.
