In 1994, the Joint Research Centre of the European Commission, in cooperation with the Commission's Directorate General 6 FII.2 and EUROSTAT, launched the Forest Information from Remote Sensing (FIRS) project.
The project comprises 2 main parts. The first part consists of 3 foundation actions: regionalization and stratification of European forest ecosystems; design of a system of nomenclature for European forest mapping; compilation of a European geo-reference forest data directory.
The second part is divided into 6 major themes: European forest statistics; European afforestation monitoring; European forest mapping; European forest monitoring; European forest modelling; mapping and monitoring of European grassland and non-forest natural vegetation. .
