Abstract

This report describes the modelling of the thermo-hydro-mechanical behaviour of the Boom clay simulating the Cactus experiment conducted in the Mol underground laboratory from 1989 to 1993. The modelling of the Cactus test has been carried out by two teams, the G.3S Research Group on Underground Structures (France) and ISMES (Italy). The processes used by those two teams are different. ISMES takes into account the totality of the strain history of the massif before the heating and cooling phase (ie the excavation of the gallery whose wall the Cactus 1 and Cactus 2 boreholes have been drilled and the excavation of the boreholes with respect of the phasing of the excavation and plugging operations). Then the whole thermal phase of Cactus 1 and Cactus 2 is modelled by ISMES. For its part, before the heating phase, G.3S considers only the excavation of the borehole with the only one phase of one day. For the thermal phase only the second heating-cooling cycle is modelled. Thermo-elasto-plastic hardening material models have been used by ISMES and G.3S. The results obtained by each of them are compiled and compared in this report.
