An initial trial of AKH equipment took place at the Vouters site between December 1986 and November 1987. The results obtained were deemed unsatisfactory; the cutting yield was greatly inferior to that of the cutting machines and the rate of progress very slow, due particularly to too many breakages of equipment. After analysis of the latter a second trial was organised, constituting the basis of research work.

This work consisted principally in the refinement of a system of electrohyraulic regulation allowing:

- Automatic modulation of the cutting machine control according to the various parameters of the workface;
- To control and ensure correct alignment of the workface;
- To link the speed of advancement of the cutting face to the charge of the electric motors of the cutting machine.

As the very high costs of equipping and dismantling the AKH system further aggravated financial results, the Bassin de Lorraine Colliery decided not to pursue the trial of this method of working. orking.
