Community Research and Development Information Service - CORDIS

A group of experts from Industry, Academia and Public Organizations came together in Brussels on 21/22 November 1996 at the invitation of the Joint Research Centre to consider the primary areas of concern related to Dependability of Extensively Deployed Products with Embedded IT. It focused on products which are deployed extensively on the market place and, for this reason, require appropriate, efficient and costly-effective approaches for managing and assuring dependability and for certification of components and sub-systems. Areas requiring further research and development can be grouped in 4 main problems domains, from the viewpoints of:

- The dependability life-cycle, and the engineering of dependable embedded systems (this includes techniques for requirements engineering, design for dependability, dependability analysis techniques, dependability management and development techniques);
- Specific technical issues of embedded systems including real-time distributed systems, networked embedded systems and certified components and tools for embedded systems;
- Business related aspects following for value demonstration and business integration of new techniques and related training and knowledge transfer issues;
- Subjects related standards, experiential results and legal aspects (includes the specification of sector specific standards, exploitation of experiential results and reliability properties and the understanding of the implications of legal aspects).
