A preliminary study on the application of nonlinear time series analysis using delay coordinate embedding on the tidal data from the Venice Lagoon (from 1980-1984) was carried out by Vittori (1992, 1993). The results obtained show that the a-periodic component which is superimposed on the periodic (astronomical) one, possesses a chaotic-deterministic character, and, hence, it is possible to predict water oscillations inside the Lagoon Venice by means of a model characterized by a few degrees of freedom. In this report this preliminary nonlinear time series analysis has been further developed using delay coordinate embedding. The aim was to understand the dynamic behaviour of the water level at the Venice Lagoon and to predict it in order to be able to detect earlier the high water phenomenon.
