The objective of the research is to develop an expert system for the operation of the sinter strand. The results expected are a higher stability of the process, and consequently a higher productivity, a more regular sinter quality and also a reduced energy consumption. The knowledge has been structured in three families of rules, and an expert system prototype dealing with two of these families has been programmed. The corresponding rules have been synthesized and formalized by grouping together all the rules concerning one type of disturbance in an autonomous entity. These entities of rules are implicitly linked together by means of a specially devised data base memorizing the material state and progression through the whole plant. The resulting knowledge base has then programmed in the form of production rules using the NEXPERT OBJECT software. All the computer tools necessary for the completion of the project have been developed. The programmed rules have then been tested and improvements made. In order to make the system more userfriendly, a dynamic graphic visualization has been added. The expert system prototype has then been completed by adding to it the third family of rules concerning the sinter quality.
