Abstract

The internal quality of continuous blooms and billets has been found to be of fundamental importance in order to guarantee final product performance and reliability. This aspect is of interest because of the present trend of casting steel near in size to the final dimensions, in order to obtain advantages in terms of efficiency and energy saving. At the present, more widely used techniques to reduce central segregation are essentially represented by the use of electromagnetic stirrers and a careful superheat temperature control. A further method to solve this problem consists in the soft reduction practice, to be performed at the point of the final solidification stage.
