The use of filter-feeding molluscs for the monitoring of selected contaminant levels in the marine environment is well known in the scientific community. In order to assure the quality of those analysis, certified reference materials and proficiency testing campaigns had been introduced by regulating authorities. However, there is still a need of the introduction of suitable analytical quality materials of high quality which can be used on a daily basis. The preparation of a mussel tissue material for the quality assurance of Hg and As analysis in bivalves is described. The principle of preparation and the analytical characterization of the material is discussed. Total concentration for As (8.98 +/- 0.67 µg/g) and Hg (0.169 +/- 0.005 µg/g) had been determined by the use of different techniques. Additionally, indicative values for major constituents (C, H, N, Na, Cl, P, S, K, Mg, Ca, Si, Fe, Al, Br, Zn, Sr) and some trace elements (Cu, Cd, Pb, Ni) have also been measured.
