Abstract

The here described material has been prepared for the Venetian Lagoon Project for the purpose of metal analysis, with emphasis on mercury. The muscle material was freeze-dried, ground in zirconium dioxide in a planetary mill and the powder sieved at 125 µm. The fraction > 125 µm was discarded and the fraction < 125 µm was collected under argon in a special mixing drum and homogenized for two weeks. The homogeneity of the materials was assessed both in Venice and in Ispra. The material, named Tuna Fish T22, proved to be perfectly homogeneous and stable over time as shown by the measurements taken at Ispra. The concentration of the major target element, mercury, was found to be 3.55 +/- 0.10 mg/kg. The material may be requested in small amounts and free-of-charge by routine laboratories for analytical quality control purposes.
