Abstract

In this work, an attempt is made to use the vast amount of parametric sensitivity studies in chemical reactors, based on the off-line analysis of energy and mass balance equations, for defining an early warning on-line criterion for runaway detection. This criterion is compared with previous ones. As can be seen from the results, this criterion opens a new route, in between the simple use of measured variables and the complex model-based state reconstruction techniques, to assess in advance hazardous situations in chemical reactors allowing for the necessary countermeasures to be taken.
