Abstract

The magnitude of the surface-state contribution to the magnetic moment of Ni(111) is calculated on the basis of previous inverse-photoemission results. A value of 0.005µ (B) atom is obtained. This low value, about 1% of the bulk magnetic moment, is a consequence of the sp character of the surface-state band.
