Abstract

This publication is the proceedings of a workshop held at the JRC Ispra (IT), 13-14 March, 1997. Its aim was to present possible future directions of applications and technologies in the field by providing:

- An overview of on-going ESPRIT projects working on remote sensing applications, geographical information systems, medical imaging systems, engineering applications and interactive multimedia services;
- Keynote speeches and a panel discussion on opportunities in multimedia data processing and its applications - and investments and actions needed to exploit them.

The target was to establish contacts, to find synergies, and to stimulate information exchange and collaboration between participants. The enclosed final programme shows presentations from 7 ESPRIT projects, 2 TELEMATICS projects, 1 ACTS project and 1 Information Society project, 3 keynote speeches and a panel/open discussion. A number of high impact business applications were presented:

- Interactive training and learning;
- Customer self-service;
- Sales service and support;
- Collaboration within and between business;
- Virtual tourism;
- Urban planning and management;
- Risk monitoring and emergency management;
- Environmental impact assessment.
