  • Connectionist computation in Earth observation: Report of the research strategy meeting of the European concerted action COMPARES held in Cagliari, Sardinia, Italy, 24-25 October 1996

The report contains the recommendations from a research strategy meeting devoted to the theme of connectionist (or neural network) computing in Earth Observation (EO) which was held in Cagliari, Sardinia, in October 1996 as part of a Concerted Action (COMPARES) within the EC Environment and Climate Programme. The main objective of the meeting was to draw up an agenda for future research, based on an assessment of what had been done so far on the application of neural or connectionist computing in remote sensing. Five key issues in the analysis of EO data emerged for which solutions involving connectionist computing could be important. These are follows:

- Classification of data;
- Signal inversion;
- Usability of advanced software systems in data analysis;
- Scalability and large problem solving in remote sensing;
- The impact of emerging systems technologies (telematics, the internet, and distributed processing).
