Abstract

The report contains the findings of an invited expert panel which was convened at the European Commission's Joint Research Centre at Ispra, Italy, in November 1996. The invited experts from the Geographical Information System (GIS) field represented different sectors of the GIS community, primarily commerce, academia, and end-user organizations. The panel was charged with the duty of identifying areas requiring priority attention in order to improve European competitiveness within the GIS industry. The following themes emerged as having particular problems in relation to Geographical Information Systems which need to be addressed:

- Interoperability and standards;
- Data generalisation;
- Data quality, integrity and updating;
- Data access;
- Data modelling and spatial analysis;
- Research and development methodology;
- Training and dissemination.

Each of these themes is expanded in this report and summaries of the points raised are provided. A number of additional points which were raised during previous discussions at the European level have also been included. included.
