The aim of this work is the continuous measurement of microhardness, for loads less than 2,5 N. This research has been initiated on a machine built for measurements with loads between 5 and 20 N. The micromeasurement technology developed in parallel with the establishment of new components adapted to this work in mechanics, metallurgy, electronics, data processing. After hundreds of measurements, this technique seems to excel in the location of sharp hardness variations, linking them with microstructure variations and microanalysis measurements. Some applications are described. This technique is complementary to metallography and characterizes mechanically the microsegregated zone. In the state of work, it defines the hardness of zones as thin as 50 µm in full material or on edges, care being taken to insure that the substrate is sufficiently homogeneous to the tested material
