  • Drawing of coated still strip: a new approach to understanding the parameters of the bare material in terms of the morphology and structure of the coating


The usual procedure adopted by the automotive industry for drawing coated steel sheet leads to fractures or to failure of the coating, at strain values well below those recognized as typical on bare materials. The question concerning the mechanisms which promote those events should thus be confronted. Two different approaches have been explored. The first aims at developing new methodologies for laboratory assessment of drawability of several coated steel sheets. Both standard (HDG, EG) and more recently developed (Zn-Ni, galvannealed, etc) coatings, with or without organic layer, were tested. All results have been also compared with those obtained by full scale tests using a servo-hydraulic press. The second goal is to identify the possible correlation between the morphology and the structure of the coatings and the forming behaviour.
