  • Evaluation of the spatial representativity of meteorological stations by an analysis of the thermal fields around each station prepared from NOAA-AVHRR images

Abstract

The present project aims to present a new approach allowing one to evaluate the spatial representativity of the air temperature measured at meteorological stations. Taking into account NOAA-AVHRR derived surface temperatures and the environmental data of the station surroundings, an evaluation of the meteorological network is made. A series of surface temperature maps are prepared from NOAA-AVHRR images. The thermal field around each station is analyzed in connection with the environmental conditions and as a function of the season. The zone of spatial representativity for each meteorological station is then defined. Preliminary results obtained for some meteorological stations in Andalusia in southern Spain are presented.
