Abstract

In the frame of the International Energy Agency (IEA) Implementing Agreement on Fusion Reactor Materials, a workshop was held at the Joint Research Centre Ispra to bring together experts from different laboratories and industries, actively working in the field. The scope of the workshop was to give an overview of the present status of SiC/SiC studies for fusion, to identify areas for further work and agree on collaborative topics. The workshop covered the following topics:

- Radiation effects;
- Mechanical properties;
- Corrosion;
- Joining techniques;
- Leak tightness and permeability;
- Thermophysical properties;
- Design concepts;
- Manufacturing technologies.

Discussions were held on:

- Design rules and specimen testing methodology;
- Fabrication of components and improvements in thermal conductivity;
- Joining methodology;
- How to improve radiation stability;
- Feasibility and development issues.
