Statistical characterization of uncertainty of neutron NDA methods
A general taxonomy is described of measurement error components occurring in the neutron NDA methods commonly used in safeguards. How the standard deviations of the components can be estimated and in what conditions this is possible are identified. How the problem of statistical quantification of the behaviour of error components is linked to the statistical sampling universe of calibration perturbing characteristics of both the unknown samples and the samples used for calibration are shown . Also it is emphasized that historical databases of inspection measurements are necessary for a reasonable statistical quantification of the effects of sample characteristics which are not taken into account in the operation of the measurement. The analysis is relevant to instruments such as the AWCC, HLNCC and PHONID.
