The report presents and analyses the results of the CEC trial on quality criteria for diagnostic radiographic images, carried out in 1991 in 83 radiological departments in 16 European countries. More than 2 000 radiographs were collected and evaluated by the field radiologists, as well as by a panel of independent radiologists and medical physicists, with regard to the list of quality criteria established by the CEC radiation protection research action. The doses to the patient had been assessed from thermoluminescent dosimetry (TLD) measurements for all the radiographs. After a brief review of the methodology, the first part of the report described the scope of the trial in terms of overall participation by country and by type of examination: chest, lumbar spine and breast. In the second part, a more detailed analysis of the results gathered for each type of examination is presented. In the third part of the report an attempt is made to explore the potential of the quality criteria concept as a tool for optimization of radiation protection of the patient.
