Community Research and Development Information Service - CORDIS

Research on stratospheric ozone depletion was a key feature of the STEP Programme (Science and Technology for Environmental Protection) 1989-92 and the Environment Programme 1991-95 of the EC. These EC activities, complemented by some strong national programmes, resulted in a balanced and coordinated programme which culminated with the organization of two major experiments, EASOE 1991-92 and SESAME 1994-95. This document intends to summarize and to disseminate the results of this European stratospheric ozone programme during 1989-95, highlighting its major achievements. It does not assess the whole science of the stratospheric ozone issue but instead it attempts to set out the contribution of the European research programme to this issue. The document is directed to scientists, research managers and policy makers. Its purpose is thus not only to increase the basic scientific knowledge, but also to identify the key research areas for the ongoing and future activities in Europe and to contribute to formulating improved environmental policy on this issue.
