Community Research and Development Information Service - CORDIS

This is the 1996 Annual Report of the Institute for Transuranium Elements (ITU). The safety of actinides in the nuclear fuel cycle continued to be the major institutional contribution of the Institute to the Programme Nuclear Fission Safety. Major research areas were basic actinide research, safety of nuclear fuels, mitigation of long-lived actinides and spent fuel characterization. ITU also provided scientific and technical support for Community policies in the area of nuclear safety and safeguards, predominantly related to the implementation of on-site laboratories at Sellafield and Cap la Hague, but also related to nuclear safety in Eastern countries and the Russian Federation. In addition, ITU continued to carry out contractual work in request of various customers.
