The cold rolling mill performances depend of models accuracy of automatization. Stress and torque models require to know the steel flow stress during rolling. A flat die compression test has been conceived to measure the flow stress with accuracy as a function of equivalent strain. This report describes this test and the method to obtain the flow stress. This study allows the modelization as a function of chemical analysis and temperature after hot rolling and coiling temperature. This model, named SMATCH, is used by the rolling process computer to provide the pre-set algorithm with the current flow stress during the cold rolling operation. The temperature influence on flow stress is studied and a model proposed. Finally, the influence of deformation speed on flow stress was studied by Hopkinson bars test device.
