Abstract

The project Simulation of the effects of long-term climatic change on groundwater flow and the safety of geological disposal sites explores the impact of climatic change, particularly of glaciation during the late Quaternary period, on groundwater flow in northern Europe. A hydrogeological model for north-west Europe has been compiled in order to provide a geometrical framework for large-scale (subglacial) groundwater flow models. Model output has been tested through the consolidation signatures in the Peelo clays of the Netherlands and the tills of eastern England, by the distribution of eskers in the area of north-west Europe occupied by ice sheets and by a field geochemical survey designed to explore the possible geochemical impacts of ice sheets. Statistical analysis is used to extrapolate future climate trends from past trends, on the assumption that the processes governing past climate change over the last 700 ka will determine trends over the next 100 ka.
