A present review of the thorium nuclear fuel cyclesFunded under: FP2-RADWASTOM 4C
Recently, a renewed interest in thorium has been expressed by distinguished scientists. Thorium as a nuclear breeder fuel, and the thorium/U-233 fuel cycle, could present some advantages as a back-up to the conventional uranium fuel cycle, and in matters of safety, non-proliferation, etc. This work is a survey and compilation of the physical properties of thorium as a nuclear fuel, research and development on practical applications in the past and at present, (especially in India) in matters of resources, mining and metallurgy, fuel fabrication, prototype reactors, fuel reprocessing and waste disposal. Comments are given on past and present projects and on possible applications in the future.
